The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Women’s soccer trip to Costa Rica was definitely memorable. From challenging soccer matches to hikes through the rainforest to days spent interacting with the local community, the team had an incredible time no matter where they went.
The women hit the ground running, and spent their first day in the capital city of San Jose learning about the rich history of the country.
After exploring several museums and parks, the team visited a local farmers market. There were plenty of new and exotic fruits and vegetables for the girls to sample, and even a few souvenir stands at which to shop.

Congrats to UWLAX game MVP Cassie Handrick!
Once their souvenirs were safely stowed away back at the hotel, it was time for the team’s first soccer match of the trip. Today, they’d be playing Costa Rica’s Moravia club.
The match was very competitive, with ball possession split down the middle and the score 0-0 at the half. UWLAX started the first half with less energy, allowing Moravia to score the first and only game of the match. Despite a burst in motivation, extremely strong playing, and two shots on goal, the UWLAX women were unable to get the ball in the net. The match ended with a Moravia win, and a list of new moves and techniques that UWLAX planned to put into action at their final two matches.
At the end of the game, athletes from both teams enjoyed recuperating from a tough match with a fresh fruit snack and plenty of upbeat conversation.
The rest of the trip was as action-packed as the very first day.
The team ventured into the rainforest for a hike to the La Fortuna waterfall and an exciting white water rafting trip. They flew across the rainforest canopy on a zip line, took a catamaran tour along the coast, and volunteered with local children.
In addition to learning about a brand new culture, the women held a team training session on the beach and played two more friendly matches. Needless to say, they returned to the United States with plenty of new experiences, both on and off the field!
